In the 15+ years we’ve been designing websites, we’ve worked in a number of programming languages including .net, php, cold fusion, and Ruby on Rails. For the better part of the last decade we have worked primarily with Ruby on Rails developing a suite of proprietary tools to help businesses easily update their websites and stay connected with their customers. When WordPress entered the picture as a blog platform many years ago, we kept it at arms length as it had yet to develop into a fully integrated platform capable of producing websites on par with our custom components.
Over time WordPress evolved into a highly customizable, user-friendly content management option for businesses of all sizes so it warranted another look. With the launch of Plexus, Inc. in late 2012 we made the decision to develop only in WordPress as it was a stable, cost effective option for our clients.
WordPress as a Content Management System
WordPress has several advantages, not the least of which is ease of use from an administrative standpoint. As a content management system (CMS), WordPress is easy to use and maintain and most businesses would have no problem making content changes to static pages, posting news, adding events, or posting gallery pictures. Additionally, the WordPress structure and availability of themes and widgets makes it easy to update or completely change the look and feel of your website without having to rebuild your site from the ground up.
Search Engine Optimization with WordPress
In terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), WordPress is Google-friendly meaning it can be optimized for your specific audience and it is easy for Google to crawl the content, headers, descriptions, etc. and rank it accordingly. We use trusted plug-ins to customize your website from the ground up and can optimize certain pages for specific keywords.
Design and Customization of WordPress
With our strong design background and sensibilities we were initially worried that we would be restricted creatively within the WordPress framework. We have found that WordPress is easily customized to suit the needs of each individual client whether they require the straight forward use of a template or a custom design. Any design limitations that are presented by WordPress are easily outweighed by all the benefits WordPress provides as a content management system.
